Hi! I’m Fran
Have you always wanted to learn Japanese? Perhaps you don’t know where to get started? Or maybe you’ve had a couple of “false starts” already…? You started learning, but gave up. Maybe you even think language learning is not for you.
I know how you feel.
When I first visited Japan in 2008, I was captivated by this fascinating country - its culture, people and most of all its language. There was one problem. I didn't speak Japanese!
I spent the following decade learning this beautiful language. I worked hard to achieve fluency, and in 2012 I passed N1, the highest level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.
Since 2015, I’ve been teaching Japanese lessons to groups in my central Brighton classroom at Step Up Japanese.
The truth is that learning Japanese isn't particularly easy, or quick. But it's a beautiful, brilliant language, and I love sharing that with you. Together, we can achieve your language learning goals. And we can have a lot of fun doing it!

I blog regularly about learning and teaching Japanese, walking Japan, and sometimes about interesting Japanese kit-kats.
If you’re ready to start speaking Japanese with confidence, you’ve come to the right place.
